The Heart of the High-Canopy, The Dragon-Perch Citadel
Overview Moonrise Castle does not just sit in the trees; it is woven into the living embrace of the Elder Monarch, the largest Titan-Sequoia in existence. It is the seat of Duchess Xanaphia Xilonodel, a masterpiece of high-elven organic architecture. However, the castle is now defined by a tense duality: the elegant, diplomatic court of the Duchess below, and the massive, fortified roosts of the Metallic Dragon Wardens above, who use the spire as a watchtower against the return of draconic undeath.
Aesthetic: The castle is a blend of Arboreal High-Fantasy and Colossal Fortification.
The Ironwood Fusuma: The inner chambers (for humanoids) feature sliding walls of silk and reinforced rice paper, allowing the space to breathe.
The Dragon-Scale Reinforcement: Since the arrival of the Wardens, vital structural branches have been reinforced with bands of Adamantine and Mithral (imported from K'thari) to support the immense weight of landed dragons.
The Two Scales: The castle has two distinct scales of architecture. The "Court Scale" is humanoid-sized. The "Sky Scale" consists of massive, open-air landings and corridors wide enough for a Huge dragon to walk in its natural form.
A. The Root-Gate (The Foundation)
The Spiral Ascendant: A massive, hollowed-out spiral ramp inside the trunk. It is wide enough for a dragon in humanoid form to walk abreast with a carriage.
The Necrotic Wards: At the insistence of the Gold Dragon Wardens, the foundation is inlaid with silver runes that glow violently if any necromantic magic (the signature of a Dracolich cult) crosses the threshold.
B. The Mid-Court (The Duchess’s Domain)
The Audience Chamber: Located on a massive shelf-fungus. This is the center of trade and politics.
The Hall of Guises: A specific antechamber where the Metallic Dragons are expected to assume their humanoid forms before entering the Duchess's court. It is lined with mirrors of True Seeing—not to catch the dragons, but so the dragons can ensure no other shapeshifters (Chromatic spies) have infiltrated the court.
C. The High-Spire (The Warden’s Domain)
The Warden’s Roost: The entire upper third of the castle has been ceded to the Dragons. The walls here are gone, replaced by massive, reinforced platforms jutting out into the air.
The Bronze Watch: A Bronze Dragon is always perched here, gazing toward the ocean, watching for ships that might smuggle dracolich phylacteries.
The Copper Solarium: A warmer, enclosed section of the canopy where the social Copper and Brass dragons lounge, debating philosophy and interrogating travelers for rumors of the "Undead Dragon."
The Hoard-Vaults: Unlike the Duchess's treasury, these are massive, magically sealed hollows in the tree where the resident dragons keep their personal hoards. They pay a "rent" to the Duchy for this security, which is the primary source of Moonpedal's immense wealth.
The "Silent" Alarm (The Roar): The castle doesn't need bells. If the city is threatened, or if Necromancy is detected, the collective roar of five to ten adult dragons from the spire is a sound that shakes the entire forest floor.
The Wind-Wards: Ancient magic protects the castle from the wind, but allows the dragons to take off and land without creating destructive downdrafts that would strip the leaves from the tree.
The "Dead-Zone" Scanners: The Gold Dragons maintain a constant magical vigil. They are not looking for armies; they are scanning the magical spectrum for the "void" signature of a Dracolich. This constant magical surveillance makes local wizards very nervous.
The Weight: The castle feels heavy. The presence of such powerful creatures creates a palpable aura of Gravitas (and literal gravity).
The Heat: The upper levels are noticeably warmer than the misty forest air, radiating the body heat of Red-blooded (Gold/Brass) fire dragons.
The Politics: The tension is thick. The Duchess rules the people, but everyone knows that if a Gold Dragon gives an order regarding "security" or "necromancy," the guards will obey the Dragon over the Duchess.
Based on the timeline of Tayon, the nature of the Elven Aristocracy, and the specific tragedy involving Ezma (High God of Death & Retribution), here is the detailed breakdown of the House of Xilonodel.
The family is defined by the tension between their "Perfect" public image and the divine "Shadow" cast by Shanairra’s trauma and her demigod son.
Duchess Xanaphia Xilonodel (Age ~650): The shrewd matriarch who remembers the "Thousand-Year" history vividly. She manages the Duchy's wealth and trade. She loves her children fiercely but treats the "Ezma Incident" with a terrifying, icy silence.
Duke Consort Rolen Nia'lo (Age ~640): A master of the "Old Ways" and a former Blade-Master. He has never forgiven Ezma, but as a mortal, he is powerless against a High God. He channels his grief into obsessively drilling the Griffon Corps.
These sons "awoke" in Year 2 with memories of the previous world. They are the bedrock of the Duchy.
1. Count Erandil Xilonodel (Heir Apparent)
Age: 315 (Born ~Year -133)
Role: High Diplomat & Ambassador to K'thari.
Personality: Lawful Neutral. He is the image of perfection—poised, educated, and utterly boring. He handles the Metallic Dragon Wardens and the K'thari trade deals.
Relation to Shanairra: He is protective but distant. He views Galinddan (the demigod nephew) as a dangerous political variable that needs to be "managed."
2. Lord Tharivol Xilonodel
Age: 295 (Born ~Year -113)
Role: Commander of the Iron-Bark Militia (The Ground Forces).
Personality: Neutral Good. Unlike his brother, he prefers the company of soldiers and Dwarves in the "Mid-Rise." He is the most practical of the siblings.
Relation to Shanairra: He was closest to her before the "incident." He hates that she is socially isolated and often invites her "unofficial" lovers to his hunts to give them social cover.
3. Lady Shanairra Xilonodel (The Marked Lady)
Age: 290 (Born ~Year -108).
Status: " The Unwed." She holds a unique, tragic position at court. Because she was "taken" by a High God, she is considered "Divinely Claimed." No mortal noble dares marry her for fear of offending Ezma, and the Aristocracy views her as "untouchable"—too holy to insult, too tainted to embrace.
Role: Mistress of Whispers. Since she cannot hold a husband, she holds secrets. She manages the Duchy's internal spy network (often using Sasi's tactics).
Her Affairs: Shanairra refuses to be a nun. She takes lovers frequently—bards, K'thari merchants, even a famous human adventurer.
Her Other Children (The "Silver-Bastards"):
Elama (Female, Age 90): A Half-Elf bard (Father was a human). She lives in the Mid-Rise, away from court.
Varis (Male, Age 40): An Elf (Father was a minor noble). He serves as a scribe in the library.
Note: These children are acknowledged by the family but have no claim to the title.
Galinddan Xilonodel (Demigod of Ezma)
Age: 149 (Born Year 33).
Class: Paladin of Vengeance / Warlock (Celestial - Ezma).
Role: Wing-Commander of the 1st Griffon Air Wing.
Appearance: He looks like a High Elf, but his skin is as pale as bone, and his eyes are solid, void-black (Ezma's mark). He does not age visibly.
Mount: "Moonstalker," a massive, albino Griffon that seems to make no sound when it flies.
Personality: True Neutral. He is quiet, efficient, and unnerving. He knows his father is the God of Death. He feels a compulsion to "audit" the battlefield—killing those whose "time is up" and sparing those whose threads are not cut.
Relationship with Mother: He loves Shanairra fiercely. It is an open secret that if anyone disrespects his mother, they will be found dead with no mark upon them (Ezma's "Recall").
Born in the Fifth World, these children represent the future and the changing times.
4. Lady Lia Xilonodel
Age: 142 (Born Year 40).
Role: High Priestess of Corellon Larethian at the Temple of the Starburst.
Story: Born shortly after the tragedy, she was raised to be the "Perfect Daughter" to redeem the family's image. She resents the pressure and is secretly fascinated by the Metallic Dragon Wardens' faith in Bahamut.
5. Lord Paelias Xilonodel
Age: 127 (Born Year 55).
Role: Master Architect.
Story: He is obsessed with the mechanics of the city. He works closely with the Dwarves of the "Mid-Rise" to maintain the Wind-Hoists. He is the most "progressive" sibling and argues for better rights for the Dragonborn mercenaries.
6. Lord Heian Xilonodel
Age: 112 (Born Year 70).
Role: The Merchant Lord.
Story: He runs the family's shipping interests. He spends more time in the K'thari capital than in Moonpedal. He is rumored to be a warlock of Feta (Fortune) to ensure his ships always arrive safely.
7. Lady Silaqui Xilonodel
Age: 92 (Born Year 90).
Role: The Beast-Breaker.
Story: She lives in the County of Aethel-Wind (Griffon-Reach). She prefers Griffons to people. She is the only one who can keep up with her nephew Galinddan in the air.
8. Lord Aramil Xilonodel
Age: 72 (Born Year 110).
Role: The Ranger / The "Root-Walker."
Story: The rebel. He despises the stuffy canopy life. He lives in the Roots, hunting giant spiders and patrolling with the Brown Dragonborn. He is the bridge between the Aristocracy and the "Meritocrats," often embarrassing his mother by bringing Dragonborn captains to dinner.
9. Lady Mialee Xilonodel
Age: 52 (Born Year 130).
Role: The Sorceress / The Baby.
Story: Just barely considered an adult by Elven standards. She manifests Wild Magic (perhaps a side effect of being the aunt of a Demigod?). She is sheltered, naive, and currently the most eligible bachelorette in the Duchy, protected by an army of brothers and a terrifying Demigod nephew.
