The Ten Stages are not a standard progression ladder that any mortal can climb simply by gaining experience or leveling up.
The Path to Stage 2: The transition from a Mundane Mortal (Stage 1) to an Awakened Mortal (Stage 2) typically requires rigorous training, martial discipline, or arcane study that unlocks a metaphysical resource. For example, a Monk transitioning from pure physical martial arts to unlocking their Ki, or a Fighter learning the magic of an Eldritch Knight, triggers this transition.
The Mortal Limit: No amount of mortal study or mastery can independently push a soul past Stage 2. For example, a Level 20 Wizard—capable of stopping time or granting wishes—is still, metaphysically, a Stage 2 being. They have perfectly mastered the formulas of the weave, but their soul's physical storage capacity remains structurally mundane.
Demigods and Ascension: Nearly all demigods live their entire existences as Stage 2 beings. They do not naturally pass this threshold unless they are actively ascended into godhood. Through unique circumstances, a being can ascend by acquiring the vast power needed to achieve Stage 5, but there are no universal, mechanical rules for this. Each path to ascension is entirely unique, requiring profound growth of character, the accumulation of immense power by some means, or specific narrative catalysts.
Capacity vs. Divinity (The Shift to "Entity"): Reaching Stage 6 or higher marks a fundamental detachment from mortal origins; the being's earlier self becomes merely a small fraction of what they are now. These higher stages use the term "Entity" rather than "Mortal" or "God." Reaching Stage 6 does not automatically make a being a worshipped "God" (which requires domains, portfolios, and mortal belief). They possess the raw metaphysical power of a deity, but remain an independent Entity unless they claim a divine role.
The Sharing of Power (Pacts and Domains): Starting at Stage 4 (Saturated Mortal), a being's internal energy is pressurized enough that they can begin sharing their power with others. If their source of power is Arcane, they can forge Warlock pacts; if their source is Divine, they can empower Clerics and Paladins (and so on). This sharing of power grants the receiver standard metaphysical class abilities, effectively awakening them to Stage 2.
The Granting Cap (Ascension): While a Stage 4 being can grant a mortal Stage 2 class abilities, granting true metaphysical ascension (pushing a soul into Stage 3 and beyond) requires the patron to be at least Stage 6 (Transcendent Entity) or higher. When this happens, the mortal's metaphysical growth is tethered to the patron's power at the exact time of the grant. The granted being is permanently capped at a maximum of one stage below the granting entity. This cap is fixed; if a Stage 6 Entity grants ascension, the mortal is forever capped at Stage 5. If that patron later ascends to Stage 7, the mortal's cap does not automatically go up unless the patron returns to elevate them again.
"The Hand-to-Mouth Existence"
Storage Capacity: Minimal to None. These beings are metaphysically "Flat." They possess no internal reservoir or sub-dimensional "pocket" to hold energy.
Resource Management: They operate on a strict 1:1 ratio. The energy they have is entirely contained within their immediate biological systems—glucose in the blood, ATP in the muscles, synaptic firing in the brain, and physical tactical training.
Growth Logic: Consumption (food, water, rest) goes directly to maintaining the physical frame. If they attempt to channel magic or perform feats beyond their biological limit, the cost is extracted immediately from their life force (HP), resulting in exhaustion or death. They are batteries that cannot be recharged, only replaced.
Lifespan Multiplier: 100% of base racial lifespan.
Ability Score Boost*: +3 Total Modifier to distribute. (Racial Ability Score Modifiers)
Bonus HP: 0
Bonus Spell Slots: None
Ability Score Ceiling: 20
Examples: Commoners, standard guards, mundane animals, untrained nascent demigods, and pure martial combatants relying on physical stamina and tactics (e.g., Battle Master Fighters, Rogues, or Monks before unlocking Ki).
"The First Flicker"
Storage Capacity: A slight thickening of the soul's fabric. Not quite a pocket, but enough metaphysical density to catch and hold ambient arcane currents for brief periods. Its most common manifestation is the formation of standard adventurer capacities: Spell Slots, Psionic Dice, Ki, and Sorcery Points.
Resource Management: They can cast spells and utilize metaphysical class abilities without consuming their own flesh, relying on the immediate weave around them, but they lack the internal storage for sustained, massive outpourings of energy beyond standard class progression.
Growth Logic: After years of training, they learn the formulas to bypass biological limits but remain physically tethered to mundane fragility. They have reached the absolute peak of natural mortal potential.
Lifespan Multiplier: 110% of base racial lifespan (The flow of internal energy slightly delays cellular decay).
Ability Score Boost*: +3 Total Modifier to distribute. (Racial Ability Score Modifiers)
Bonus HP: 0
Bonus Spell Slots: None
Ability Score Ceiling: 20
Examples: Novice to legendary adventurers, hedge mages, standard demigods, Monks who have unlocked Ki, Eldritch Knight Fighters, and Level 20 Archmages (masters of the formula, but still mortal vessels).
"The Birth of the Pocket"
Storage Capacity: The defining trait of this Stage is the development of the "Pocket"—a metaphysical cavity within the soul that acts like a second lung. They expand their internal storage for Arcane and Kinetic energy far beyond natural class limits.
Resource Management: They can unleash bursts of power without immediately burning their HP. The Pocket buffers the strain of magic and superhuman physical exertion.
Growth Logic: Training and trauma expand the Pocket. They are no longer flat; they have depth. This requires breaking past the mortal limit via a unique path of ascension or a divine grant. They have begun to actively step away from their mortal origins.
Lifespan Multiplier: 160% of base racial lifespan.
Ability Score Boost*: +2 to each ability score (12 Total Modifier).
Bonus HP: +18
Bonus Spell Slots: None
Ability Score Ceiling: 20 + Boost Modifier
Examples: Elite planar commanders, specially anointed champions of the gods.
"The Pressurized Soul"
Storage Capacity: The Pocket condenses and solidifies into a "Core"—a pressurized sphere of energy. It is constantly absorbing ambient energy from the environment.
Resource Management: The soul becomes a battery that charges itself. They recover faster and can hold significantly more raw power than a standard vessel.
Power Sharing: Starting at this stage, the entity's power is dense enough to be siphoned by others. If their source of power is Arcane, they can forge Warlock pacts; if Divine, they can empower Clerics and Paladins, elevating those followers to Stage 2 (Awakened Mortal).
Growth Logic: The Core dictates physical reality. The body becomes incredibly dense and resilient to contain the pressure.
Lifespan Multiplier: 250% of base racial lifespan.
Ability Score Boost*: +4 to each ability score (24 Total Modifier).
Bonus HP: +24
Bonus Spell Slots: +1 L1, +1 L2, +1 L3.
Ability Score Ceiling: 20 + Boost Modifier
Examples: Ascending heroes on the threshold of true divinity, high-tier anointed planar entities, minor Warlock patrons.
"The Overflowing Cup"
Storage Capacity: The Core cracks from internal pressure and becomes a "Font." They no longer just store energy; they generate it continuously.
Resource Management: Output begins to exceed required input. They passively leak power, often causing environmental phenomena (halos, floating hair, temperature drops).
Power Sharing: Can freely share their power to create Stage 2 followers (Warlocks, Clerics, Paladins, etc.) just as Stage 4 beings can, but with greater ease and volume.
Growth Logic: They have broken the 1:1 rule of the physical universe. They are entirely self-sustaining entities, bound only by the theoretical limits of their Font's output rate. A demigod must reach this stage to be considered truly ascended.
Lifespan Multiplier: 500% of base racial lifespan (The Font actively and continuously refreshes the physical form).
Ability Score Boost*: +8 to each ability score (48 Total Modifier).
Bonus HP: +30
Bonus Spell Slots: +3 L1, +3 L2, +3 L3, +1 L4, +1 L5, +1 L6.
Ability Score Ceiling: 20 + Boost Modifier
Examples: Minor deities, ascended demigods, newly forged planar lords.
"The Transcendent Network"
Storage Capacity: The Font expands outward, intertwining with the fabric of reality itself to form a "Network." Their soul maps across ley lines and physical domains.
Resource Management: Power is decentralized. They can draw strength from specific conceptual portfolios or the sheer metaphysical weight of their existence.
Growth Logic: They are no longer just individuals; they are living concepts. To truly exhaust them, one must exhaust the concept they represent. This is the minimum stage required to grant lesser beings the capacity to ascend past Stage 2.
Lifespan Multiplier: 1,000% of base racial lifespan (Effectively millennial lifespans; viewing their mortal origins as a brief infancy).
Ability Score Boost*: +16 to each ability score (96 Total Modifier).
Bonus HP: +36
Bonus Spell Slots: +5 L1, +5 L2, +5 L3, +3 L4, +3 L5, +3 L6, +2 L7, +2 L8, +2 L9.
Ability Score Ceiling: 20 + Boost Modifier
Examples: Beings with the power of standard Pantheon Deities, Greater Powers, or ancient conceptual beings.
"The Singularity of Will"
Storage Capacity: The Network collapses into a dense, inescapable singularity—an "Infinite Well."
Resource Management: Energy ceases to be a consumable resource. They do not cast spells by spending energy; they alter reality by imposing their Will upon it. The Well provides an endless, instantaneous supply.
Growth Logic: They are bound only by the narrative weight of their existence and the opposing Wills of other Sovereign Entities. They dictate the rules of their specific domains with absolute authority.
Lifespan Multiplier: 10,000% of base racial lifespan (Functionally immortal to mortal observers, capable of living for epochs).
Ability Score Boost*: +32 to each ability score (192 Total Modifier).
Bonus HP: +42
Bonus Spell Slots: +7 L1, +7 L2, +7 L3, +5 L4, +5 L5, +5 L6, +4 L7, +4 L8, +4 L9, +2 L10.
Ability Score Ceiling: 20 + Boost Modifier
Examples: Entities with the capacity of Major Deities (Ezma, Eisa, Lom, Senzyn), supreme planar rulers.
"The Weaver of Threads"
Storage Capacity: The Well expands to weave the very fabric of planar reality. They manipulate the macro-threads of existence, holding dominion over sprawling, interconnected multiversal systems.
Resource Management: They generate and sustain vast metaphysical ecosystems. The energy they exhale creates the atmosphere in which lesser entities breathe.
Growth Logic: Their existence dictates the boundaries of the planes they oversee. They are architects of reality, shaping the fundamental laws of magic and physics within their spheres of influence.
Lifespan Multiplier: Eternal (Ageless; cellular decay ceases entirely).
Ability Score Boost*: +64 to each ability score (384 Total Modifier).
Bonus HP: +48
Bonus Spell Slots: +9 L1, +9 L2, +9 L3, +7 L4, +7 L5, +7 L6, +6 L7, +6 L8, +6 L9, +4 L10.
Ability Score Ceiling: 20 + Boost Modifier
Examples: Overdeities of singular planes, Ancient Cosmic Entities.
"The Engine of the Multiverse"
Storage Capacity: The Well is effectively the size of a Galaxy. It is not a container; it is a gravity well that anchors a reality.
Resource Management: They operate on an unfathomable cycle of "Consumption of the End to Create the Beginning." They process Entropy (the waste product of the universe) and excrete Genesis (new stars, new souls, new timelines).
Growth Logic: They are the ultimate recyclers of the multiverse. They ensure that the 5th World does not stagnate into heat death, acting as a foundational force of macro-existence.
Lifespan Multiplier: Eternal (Bound to the lifespan of the universe itself).
Ability Score Boost*: +128 to each ability score (768 Total Modifier).
Bonus HP: +54
Bonus Spell Slots: +11 L1, +11L2, +11 L3, +9 L4, +9 L5, +9 L6, +8 L7, +8 L8, +8 L9, +6 L10.
Ability Score Ceiling: 20 + Boost Modifier
Examples: Primordial Forces, Embodiments of Universal Constants.
"The Fixed Point"
Storage Capacity: The Well transcends spatial definition. It is the canvas upon which the multiverse itself is painted.
Resource Management: Infinite and absolute. Energy is simply the byproduct of their continued existence. They do not manipulate the weave; they are the loom from which the weave originates.
Growth Logic: Beyond the concept of growth. They are the fixed point from which all multiversal constants are derived and the absolute apex of metaphysical capacity.
Lifespan Multiplier: Eternal (Existing beyond the concept of time entirely).
Ability Score Boost*: +256 to each ability score (1536 Total Modifier).
Bonus HP: +60
Bonus Spell Slots: +13 L1, +13 L2, +13 L3, +11 L4, +11 L5, +11 L6, +10 L7, +10 L8, +10 L9, +8 L10.
Ability Score Ceiling: 20 + Boost Modifier
Examples: Anushirvan (The Supreme God).
* Stat Shifting (The Per-Score Limit): You may reallocate the points granted by a Stage, but you can only subtract a maximum of 25% (rounded down) from any single individual ability score's baseline boost. The total pool of points granted by the Stage remains fixed and cannot be exceeded. (Note: For Stages 1 and 2, the Total Modifier of 3 acts as Racial Ability Score Modifiers.)
