Born from marine minerals and shaped by physical compression, this psionic crystalline substance exists in a dual identity: the living, sea-nourished ore (Shuijin) and its compressed, mind-resonant forged state (Nianite).
In its unworked state, Shuijin resembles cloudy, milky-white quartz or dense ice, carrying a subtle internal grain that refracts ambient light. Though visually similar to brittle gemstones, it possesses a unique organic responsiveness to salt and minerals.
When heated in a forge, the material softens into a dense, workable glasslike state. Under the physical blow of a hammer, the crystal lattice compresses tightly, unlocking a persistent psionic resonance (Niàn). Upon cooling, the material retains its original identity as Shuijin while simultaneously becoming Nianite—a clear, alabaster-like crystal with the shock absorption, weight, and structural density of metamorphic rock.
Shuijin crystals cannot be melted down, welded, or fused together. Two separate crystals will never join into one, regardless of heat or pressure. Any finished piece of Nianite equipment—whether a dagger or a full breastplate—must be forged from a single, contiguous Shuijin crystal.
Because a single crystal cannot be merged with others, size is achieved through time, space, and salt water:
The Growth Cycle: Submerging a piece of Shuijin in brackish or sea water causes it to absorb dissolved minerals, slowly expanding its crystalline body outward over time.
Cultivating Monoliths: Crafters and blacksmiths cultivate "crystal orchards" in ocean tide pools, subterranean brine tanks, or estuaries. Given enough time and a large enough vessel of salt water, even a small seed crystal can grow into a massive monolith suitable for heavy armor or greatswords.
Heating Shuijin disrupts its brittle structure, softening it into a dense, workable glasslike state. As the craftsman applies physical force, the crystal lattice compresses tightly and creates psionic resonance (Niàn).
It never stops being Shuijin, but it also becomes Nianite when forged. Once cooled, its compressed structure becomes fixed, permanently locked into its new shape with high density and resilience.
Because Nianite never truly stops being Shuijin, it retains its deep elemental connection to salt water:
Internal Mending (Saline Regeneration): If a Nianite blade or armor piece suffers fractures, chips, or structural damage, the internal psionic lattice is disrupted. Submerging the damaged item in salt water overnight causes the material to behave like raw Shuijin along the fracture lines. It actively draws in crystalline minerals from the water, knitting its internal cracks back together while perfectly preserving its forged Nianite shape.
External Sprouting: If a fully healed Nianite item remains submerged in salt or brackish water past the point of internal repair, raw, uncompressed Shuijin crystals will begin to sprout off its exterior surface. Crafters can snap these wild sprouts off without harming the main weapon, harvesting them to seed new crystals.
Material Rarity: Very Rare (Psionic Crystalline Mineral)
Forging Requirement: Smith's Tools or Mason's Tools. Must be worked from a single cultivated crystal heated to a workable glasslike state.
Mind-Bound Density: While wielding or wearing Nianite, you gain advantage on saving throws made to resist effects that would break, shatter, or disarm your equipment.
Saline Repair: Restores all lost structural integrity or hit points after being submerged in salt water overnight (at least 8 hours).
Nianite Weapons: Bypasses resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage dealt by nonmagical attacks due to its compressed crystal density. When the wielder deals a critical hit, the weapon emits a localized psionic pulse, dealing an additional 1d6 Psychic damage.
Nianite Armor: While wearing Nianite armor, your mental focus reinforces your physical defense. You gain a +1 bonus to AC, and whenever you make a saving throw to maintain Concentration, you can add your mental ability modifier (Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma) as a bonus to the roll.
